The Principle of Dana

What is Dana?

In the Pali language, Dana means generosity — the practice of giving freely, without expectation of return. It is one of the ten Paramis, the essential qualities of character cultivated on the path to liberation.

In the tradition of Vipassana meditation, all courses are offered entirely on a Dana basis. No fees are charged for teaching, room, or board. Students who have experienced the benefits of the practice are invited — never required — to give so that future students may have the same opportunity. Neither the teachers nor those who serve the courses receive any payment. The spread of Dhamma is carried out with purity of purpose, free from any commercialism.

Dhamma Law PLLC is founded on this same principle. We believe that access to justice should not depend on the ability to pay. Just as a meditation center opens its doors to all who wish to learn, we offer our legal services to those who lack the resources to afford representation — freely, and with the same sincerity and care we would bring to any client.

Those who have benefited from our services, and who wish to ensure that others may receive the same help, are welcome to give Dana according to their means and volition. This is not a fee. It is an opportunity to participate in the cycle of generosity that sustains this work.

And if you have nothing material to give, know this: one of the most powerful forms of Dana costs nothing at all. To sit and meditate — to purify your own mind — is itself an act of generosity toward the world. When you practice in any tradition of the Buddha's teaching, whether through Vipassana as taught by S.N. Goenka, the Insight Meditation Center (IMC), or any other Dhamma-based tradition, you generate metta — loving-kindness — that benefits not only yourself but all beings around you. This is Dhamma Dana, the highest gift. No money is required. Only your sincere effort on the cushion.

How It Works

A Different Kind of Law Practice

When you come to Dhamma Law, you will never be asked how much you can pay before we agree to help you. We take your case based on its merits and your need — not your financial situation.

Our operating costs are funded through two sources: voluntary Dana from those we have served, and revenue from our intellectual property litigation practice — covering patent, copyright, trade secret, and trademark matters. This structure allows us to provide legal representation to individuals who might otherwise go without — people facing incarceration or struggling with civil matters that affect their basic dignity and wellbeing.

Just as in the Vipassana tradition, the names of those who give are never published. Giving is a private act between the giver and their own conscience.
